Eskimo woman´s leather breech

Did´t you know that the iconic Aalto-vase, also known as the Savoy-vase, work name was Eskimo Woman´s Leather Breech... Alvar and his wife got the inspiration from Sami woman´s dress. Read more about the history from here. And Aalto´s couple never made money with the vase, because the design  belonged to the factory for which the design competition entry was produced (Karhulan Lasitehdas), nowadays knowns as Iittala. I really like products and designs which have own history and stories behind them.

Kaiketi. Maljakko oli suunnitelukilpailu työ, jonka tilasi Savoy-ravintola. Siitä siis nimi. Aallot eivät koskaan ansainnet maljakollaan, joita on myyty muutamia, penniäkään, koska oikeudet menivät silloiselle valmistajalle (Karhulan-lasitehdas), jonka omisti Antti Ahlström. No, herra Ahlström tosin tilasi Aallolta aika paljon suunnittelua, eli toivottavasti jotakin  maksua meni edes ketunhäntinä. Ainakin arvostamaan suunnitelijoita.  Lisää aiheesta löytyy linkeistä 12 3

  1. i didn't know Aalto never made money out of that iconic vase...such a shame really, but it's always the same old story: creative people create and business people make the money out of it. I have mixed feeling for such companies, the prices are staggering, the people who design stuff make little money (or worse none) and all is made in countries where the workers get paid a misery.

    1. Aalto couple designed Savoy vase 1936 and in that era designers didn´t have agents or good contracts. And Ahlström´s were a wealthy industrial family which were big customer to Aalto. And even hi (and she) didn´t get money from the Savoy vase they got huge architect projects via Ahlström´s family. So I´m quite sure that in the end they made some profit.
